Saw
Mill Summer Theatre is a Chappaqua based community theater
group originally formed in 1968 by students and teachers
at Horace Greeley High School. In 1973 Saw Mill Summer Theater,
Inc. was formed and has remained as one of a very few self-supporting
not-for-profit theater companies. Over our four decade history
Saw Mill Summer Theatre has featured such notable local
talents as Vanessa Williams (recording artist), Dar Williams
(recording artist), Roxanne Hart (Chicago Hope, Highlander,
Oh God You Devil), Jay O'Sanders (Tumbleweeds, Music of
the Heart, Oliver Stone's JFK, For Richer or Poorer), Andy
Zulla (producer/engineer Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Natalie
Imbruglia, Michael Bolton, and Heather Hedley), Christopher
Williams (Dodgeball) Patrick Collins (Young Doctors in Love),
Heather Paige Kent (That's Life, Jenny McCarthy Show), Larry
O'Keefe (writer Bat Boy & Legally Blond), Daniel O'Keefe
(writer Seinfeld & Drew Carey Show), Justin Stengel
(head writer and producer Late Show with David Letterman).
The 2006 performers have equally impressive resumes which
can be viewed on their bio pages.
Our
continued goal has been to bring quality entertainment to
the community while also providing a first class forum for
our membership to develop their endeavors in every aspect
of musical theater production. We strive to select shows
that provide our audiences with the opportunity to enjoy
challenging and large production musicals that are rarely
attempted outside of Broadway, (The Who's Tommy, Chess,
Jesus Christ Superstar). Our production of West Side Story
was selected "Best Musical" for 1998-99 throughout
Westchester, Putnam and Fairfield counties by the Patent
Trader's Edward Buroughs.
SMST
has also had the unique opportunity of presenting an original
musical co-written by Westchester Broadway Theatre's George
Puello and Emmy winner Andy Zulla entitled Parusia (a modern
day messianic story) in 1997. This original production was
featured in the New York Times, NBC's Today in New York
and News 12 Westchester. Both a studio and live cast recording
of the show were produced with several numbersairing on
WFAS radio. In April, 2000, Saw Mill Summer Theatre joined
forces with cast members from Broadway's Jekyll & Hyde
including Jekyll & Hyde lead Robert Evan (also Jean
Valjean in Broadway's Les Miserables), Kate Shindle (Miss
America 1998), Joe Mahowald, John Traecy Egan and Juan Betancur
to perform a concert version of Parusia at the Westchester
Broadway Theatre.
Although
Saw Mill Summer Theatre is, itself, a self-supporting non-profit
group, we recognize and assist other important groups in
our community. Our performances have raised funds for the
Lord's Pantry (a group that provides meals to homebound
AIDS patients), the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (a group
dedicated to the treatment of an inherited neurological
disorder), the United Way and the Children's Village. In
addition, our shows have entertained groups that include
United Cerebral Palsy, Chappaqua Summer Scholarship Program
and various youth camps.
Saw
Mill Summer Theater is one of the few remaining totally
self-supporting theater groups in Westchester. As a self-supporting
group, we receive no funds from any governmental agencies
or municipalities. All revenue is from tickets sales, program
advertisements, donations and grants.
We
urge everyone who has entertained or been entertained by
Saw Mill Summer Theater these past 4 decades to continue
to support Saw Mill Summer Theater and community theaters
throughout Westchester County.
